Australian Railway Gauges,
a presentation by The Hon. Tim Fischer AC
Railway Sation Café, Railway Square, Junee
Saturday, March 10, 2018 @ 1:00pm
Junee Rhythm n Rail Festival’s Patron, the Hon. Tim Fischer AC, will give an engaging presentation on the history of Australian Railway Gauges.
Before the Federation of Australia occurred, each colony in Australia rolled out their own railway tracks. Unfortunately, each independent colony adopted a different width between the two rails (known as the gauge) resulting in Australia having a mixture of Narrow, Standard and Broad gauge track — a problem that still affects rail connectivity even today.
Relax in the ambient atmosphere of the Railway Station Café, enjoying delicious food and beverages, whilst listening to Mr Fischer’s presentation on how and why these different gauges were adopted and what has been done to help resolve the issues of different track width.
Cost: Free.
